The one TWO one TO. [a new song]
Here's a new song that I wrote with my friend, Graydon Holden, a few weeks ago. We played it at this past Sunday's NightChurch UNplugged. In fact, this is the first time we are playing it in front of people. [this, along with shoddy musicianship and mediocre talent, explain the generally average performance!]
It comes out of John the Baptizer's message to the people coming to be baptized by him in the Jordan River, just before Jesus goes public with his ministry. In Luke 3, John does a great job helping the people define what "the baptized life" looks like. Often we forget that continuing in our faith can cost so much.
He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.
"What should we do then?" the crowd asked.
John answered, "The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same."
Tax collectors also came to be baptized. "Teacher," they asked, "what should we do?"
"Don't collect any more than you are required to," he told them.
Then some soldiers asked him, "And what should we do?"
He replied, "Don't extort money and don't accuse people falsely—be content with your pay."
The song sort of takes on two of the Sacraments that Jesus commands us to celebrate: Baptism and Communion and how we are to do these IN RESPONSE to His love for us. Please enjoy.

We'd love to hear your feedback.
Maybe someday we'll be privileged to record this with our dear friend, Mr. Bill Archer?

We run
We stall
We walk
We crawl
To the water we go down
under waves of grace we drown.
The one who has TWO gives one TO
the one who has none, now he has some.
This is the Body of Christ.
This is LOVE:
that we should live our lives to bandage those who bleed
This is LOVE:
the hungry we would spend our selves to feed
This is the Body of Christ, broken and shed for our lives
This is the Body of Christ, broken so we can give our lives

Hey man, I really like it. The melody is strong, and I think the lyrics are even stronger. Record it for real, and I would be happy to pass it along to our worship team.
i like it too
thanks for the kind words.
we'll be playing it at NightChurch this sunday night for the first time with a full band. we'll see how it comes together.
for more info, please see blog.NightChurch.org
What kind of guitar are you playing?
I know... totally random. But I'm curious...
thanks for asking. it's a Tom Anderson Crowdster Plus. find more here.
this week, we'll be playing "The One TWO One TO" song again with a full band and hopefully we'll get a good record mix of it to post here. maybe we'll get to head into the studio sometime soon too?
question, Mr. JD: how did you stumble on to my blog? i'm glad you're here, and i hope you enjoy yourself, but i'm just curious as to how people are finding their way here.
if you liked what you found here, you also may want to check out blog.NightChurch.org
I've been reading along for about a year now. I sat here thinking for a minute or two... and can't remember how I originally came across your blog--you being all the way over there on the West coast and me being in south-central Kentucky. I've had you linked from mine for quite a while, though. But I thoroughly enjoy your postings, musings and outlook on on church/life.
I thought it was a Crowdster. (Must be nice. I'm trying to start setting aside funds for a Taylor GS.) The Crowdster is a beautiful guitar, but not my cup of tea. I like 'em big, bassy and loud! I'm a J200 or old D-28 kinda guy myself.
I was blown away with NightChurch, by the way. We are experiencing (here in my community of faith) what you all went through a while back: there is a gaping hole in our "college age/young adult" demographic and something needs to be done. I know we don't need anymore of the typical ministry model, something different and innovative and authentic needs to be pursued. So I pointed our staff leadership to how you all did it: elders listened to the masses then put together a small team to pray and propose a future path. Today was only our second meeting around the idea, but thought you'd like to know that what you've done is a great precedent to follow...
JD, that's excellent stuff!
humility has gone a really long way for us. not "roll over" attitudes, but humble convictions. we've got great guys on our leadership team that have brought fresh balance and perspective to the group.
one of our guys is relentless in pursuit and protection of the NightChurch vision to target disenfranchised and unchurched in our community.
another of our guys isn't concerned about looking foolish for the sake of honest, transparent, authenticity.
put some good guys around you.
keep us posted with how you're coming along too!
thanks so much for sharing.
i like it ... it was good
I like the lyrics : ) my favorite:
"under waves of grace we drown"
"broken so we can give our lives"
That was the message of The Lord. I think you have done honor to our faith. Congrats!
On a side note: Was John not surprised to see Jesus? If I remember correctly, and I may well not, John thought himself not worthy to baptise the Son of Man.... or perhaps I have completely missed the point.
Are you playing music now? I used to play all the time. It would be nice to put intruments together the next time I head up to WA to see my sister. Although, my ultra progressive views regarding religion, have been known to agitate the "Faithful".
Interesting song...not the easiest melody for people to follow (your choice of chords behind it may make it too hard for an audience to sing along). Keep working at it though.
anonymous, thanks for sharing your input. if you share your name, i'd love to hear more of what you think.
feedback is helpful, but it helps to understand the perspective the feedback is coming from so that it can be properly evaluated and applied.
thanks.
Your song was a good attempt, but honestly I find it disturbing. It reminds me of the feeling I had when I became ultra depressed! Glad you are trying! Don't give up, just work a lot harder, maybe praying more will help!
I agree with Mr. Anonymous, try harder. Justin, it is like anything in the Christian life, you must try really hard or else it will suck. And if you fail, you must try even harder.
Mr. Anonymous' wisdom applies to any area of your life. Are you struggling with lust? Try harder. Are you forgetting to read your Bible? Try harder. Are you being a jerk to your co-workers? Try harder.
It sums up most of life. Try harder to do what you are trying to do.
Hope you can understand this, Justin. Maybe pray about it.
(Mr. Anonymous is just realized you might be Ms. Anonymous. Sorry for the assumption)
Signed-
Mr. Anonymous the IV
