Hi Justin,

I took a listen to your song and have some notes for you:

First off, you're a talented dude. I like the music and the general sound.
I have some criticisms, but want you know before I get into that, that I
hear creativity and can tell you've put a lot of time and thought into
crafting this song. Some of my notes may help, others may not. Keep what's
good and forget the rest.

I really like the opening 2 lines and think they set the song up well.
However I feel like the song never quite delivers on the excitement of the
first 2 lines. The instructional elements are good (instructional songs are
difficult, but great when done effectively), but the delivery lacks impact.
I'd say the same for the chorus. The melody in general needs some life,
some passion so that it doesn't seem like a trite smile that God put on your
face. Contrast two types of smiles: The kind of smile you get watching a
marginally funny commercial from a local business vs. the smile of
anticipation and deep admiration and satisfaction of seeing your wife walk
down the aisle toward you at your wedding. I think the smile God puts on
our face is more like the latter. What do you think?

Theologically, you make many points:
1. God's healing
2. Be transparent
3. Happiness from God
4. Guard yourself
5. Good works
6. Reach out to God

This is a lot to put in one song. The best worship songs all seem to
revolve around one point, revealing it clearly and affectionately. How
could you do that with "Smile"?

Secondly, if you were to point to scripture as inspiration for this song,
where would you point? I think the term "he put a smile on my face" may be
somewhat generic, and as I listen, I want it to go deeper. God punished his
Son so he could rise and conquer death, that we may die to sin and live with
him in his resurrection...this is the righteousness of God and encompasses
all of your theological points listed above. When I meditate on his
righteousness, my response is much more complex than a smile.

All in all, the music is good and the song has potential. I'd keep
tweaking, simplify and cultivate it. Or I'd let it be and write a new one.
Maybe both. :)

Hope this helps brother. Keep writing!!

Peace,

Pastor Joe Day

Mars Hill Church

i thanked him for his time and was appreciative of such an in-depth look and analysis of what i created. i agree with him that i feel like the song goes in "many directions". those mars hill guys set the bar really high, and i really value their input and their work! thanks Joe!

i'm listening to this song for a refresher as we're playing it tomorrow night for the NightChurch launch [Sunday January 11 / C3 / 6:00p] and i would just like to point out what an incredible job gabe archer [of the pale pacific] did on the additional electric guitars.

he's the next level.
